GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, AUG 2 – Negotiators face deep divisions over production limits as plastic waste in soils and waterways is expected to surge 50% by 2040, United Nations Environment Programme said.
- On Tuesday in Geneva, delegates from nearly 180 nations launched a 10-day conference to seek a plastic pollution pact amid deep divisions.
- A group of countries seeking a binding pact face opposition from a group of mostly oil-producing nations, which prioritize waste treatment, deepening divisions.
- Some 460 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally each year, and plastic waste in soils and waterways is expected to surge 50 percent by 2040, according to UNEP.
