Multi-Billion-Dollar Mt. Storm Natural Gas Plant Could Add 2.6 GW of Power Generation in West Virginia
The project could add 2.6 gigawatts of natural gas generation and create 1,400 construction jobs, Dominion said.
- On Tuesday, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that Dominion Energy proposes constructing a new natural gas-fired power plant in Grant County, which would connect to the existing Mt. Storm Power Station.
- Dominion Energy filed an application last week to modify its air quality permit, responding to projected energy demand increases on the PJM grid that align with Gov. Patrick Morrisey's "50 by 50 Power Generation Plan."
- The project estimates creating 1,400 construction jobs and 150 permanent positions once completed, though proposed annual emissions include more than 9.85 million tons of greenhouse gases.
- Dominion Energy spokesperson Jeremy Slayton said the power will "serve customers in Virginia," but "excess energy can be utilized by the PJM grid, which includes West Virginia."
- PJM predicts peak grid demand will grow largely due to new data centers, positioning the Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station as critical infrastructure to offset future deficits.
