- Amid passage of a major reconciliation bill, President Donald Trump signed a national private school voucher program into law as part of a massive reconciliation package.
- Introduced on Jan. 31, the measure earned approval from the House Ways and Means Committee on May 14 before merging into the reconciliation bill.
- Allocating up to $1,700 in federal tax credits for donations, the law lets households earning up to 300% of area median gross income fund K-12 tuition, tutoring, technology and transportation.
- Following the signing, the administration drew heat for withholding $6.8 billion in K-12 funds while Republicans praised school choice.
- With the program taking effect in the 2027 tax year, states can opt in and have until 2026 to set up organizations for over 138 million potential beneficiaries.
