Dubai Unveils Underground $9bn Metro Gold Line to Serve 1.5 Million Passengers

The Dh34 billion line will serve 1.5 million residents and carry up to 465,000 passengers a day after 2040, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Dubai unveiled the Dubai Metro Gold Line, a Dh34 billion fully underground project scheduled for completion on September 9, 2032, representing the emirate's largest transport initiative to date.
  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, stated the expansion addresses congestion amid the emirate's population boom, intending to encourage commuters to shift from cars to public transport.
  • Extending the network to 162km and 85 stations, the Gold Line will connect 15 strategic locations, including Mina Rashid and Business Bay; Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the Roads and Transport Authority, called it a "strategic milestone in the evolution of Dubai's public transport network."
  • Authorities expect the project to generate a 430 per cent economic return through savings in fuel and time, with officials planning to issue tenders this year and award a construction contract in 2027.
  • The route will link with the Red and Green lines and Etihad Rail to support mobility across 55 mega development projects, aligning with Dubai's long-term vision to build the world's best city.
