Starmer critic elected leader of Unison, the UK's biggest union
Andrea Egan won with nearly 60% of votes to lead Unison for five years and plans to review its Labour Party links, pledging to donate excess salary to union funds.
- On Wednesday Andrea Egan was elected general secretary of Unison, defeating Christina McAnea by 60% to 40% on a 7% turnout at the UK's biggest trade union.
- Egan, who was expelled from Labour in 2022, has said she will end Unison's 'subservient' ties with the party and criticised Labour leadership earlier this month as `not connected to working people`.
- Egan said she will take a £50,000 social-worker salary and donate the excess general-secretary pay to union welfare and strike funds, and she will begin her five-year term in January.
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer congratulated Ms Egan and thanked Christina McAnea for her service and role in securing the Employment Rights Bill, which passed both Houses on Tuesday.
- The result could weaken Sir Keir's position on Labour's NEC and prompt a review of Unison's links with Labour after Your Party praised Andrea's victory as proof workers reject more cuts.
