NRA Sues Maryland over so Called 'Glock Ban'

The suit says the ban violates the Second and Fourteenth Amendments and would bar sales of pistols already covered by federal converter restrictions.

  • On Tuesday, the National Rifle Association, Firearms Policy Coalition, and Second Amendment Foundation sued Maryland officials in federal court to block SB 334, the 'Stop DIY Machine Guns Act,' which Governor Wes Moore signed into law that same day.
  • The law prohibits pistols with a 'cruciform trigger bar' that can be modified into automatic weapons. Plaintiffs argue the statute unconstitutionally bans firearms in 'common use,' citing Supreme Court precedents District of Columbia v. Heller and New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen.
  • Glock-Style pistols hold nearly 65% of the U.S. handgun market as of 2020, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recognizes them as popular for civilian use. Between 40% and 65% of law enforcement agencies, including the Baltimore Police Department, issue the pistols.
  • Effective January 1, 2027, the law imposes penalties of up to three years in prison or a $5,000 fine for violations. While current owners may retain their property, the statute restricts future retail sales and transfers.
  • Maryland Shall Issue, led by President Mark Pennak, announced plans to file a companion lawsuit shortly. The NRA intends to pursue the case to the Supreme Court to establish Second Amendment protections nationwide.
