New lawsuits blame suicide, terminal illness deaths on Palisades fire

More than a dozen plaintiffs allege utility failures and inadequate maintenance worsened the fire that destroyed 7,000 structures and caused 12 deaths, according to the master complaint.

  • Plaintiffs invoked SB 447 to add death claims to Grigsby et al. before it expired Dec. 31, against LADWP, state parks department, and SoCalGas.
  • During a fierce windstorm, a Jan. 1, 2025 fire reportedly became the Jan. 7, 2025 conflagration after a former Pacific Palisades resident allegedly set a small fire never fully extinguished.
  • Plaintiffs say LADWP's nearly year-empty 117-million-gallon Pacific Palisades reservoir left fire hydrants dry, and SoCalGas natural gas lines failed to shut off, causing explosions and secondary fires.
  • Attorney Alexander Robertson said families report loved ones declined and died months after the blaze, including Marc Lasky and Dan Caldwell , among more than a dozen plaintiffs.
  • With more than 7,000 structures lost and 12 killed, the suits name SoCalGas, Southern California Edison, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and three communications companies, blaming overgrown brush, toppled wooden power poles and lack of water.
