New Kelowna program to 'bridge' the gap between gender-diverse kids, their parents

The four-session B.R.I.D.G.E. program is free and includes transportation and child care support, organizers said.

  • The TransParent Okanagan Support and Education Society launched B.R.I.D.G.E., a four-session program in Kelowna designed to support parents of gender-diverse children of all ages.
  • Public debate and policy changes in Canada, the United States, and Alberta have fueled misinformation, prompting the need for spaces where families can engage openly, according to executive director Carrie Broughton.
  • Sessions occur Sept. 21, 23, 28, and 30 in downtown Kelowna, with the program free thanks to support from Health Canada, UBC Vancouver School of Nursing, and SARAVYC. Funding covers participant transportation and child care.
  • The program offers a private, research-based environment where participants can "ask difficult questions and work through tough emotions." Broughton emphasized, "People do not need to show up here with the right language."
  • In 2027, the program will expand to Vernon, Salmon Arm, Penticton, and Kamloops to reach more families. Registration is required for current sessions, with locations shared only to confirmed participants.
