New hosepipe ban announced for millions of UK households
Anglian Water said demand has reached record levels after a dry spring and heatwaves, and households face fines of up to £1,000 for breaches.
- On Friday, Affinity Water announced a hosepipe ban for its Central region effective July 17, affecting more than 3 million customers across Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey, and parts of London.
- Following the warmest June on record in England, with temperatures reaching 37.7C, water demand has surged around 20 per cent above normal levels, straining Affinity's supply capacity.
- Under the ban, customers cannot use hosepipes to water gardens, wash cars, or fill paddling pools. Exemptions apply to Blue Badge holders, those on the Priority Services Register, and customers receiving WaterSure tariff support.
- Anglian Water announced a hosepipe ban on Friday for more than 5 million customers in the East of England, while Cambridge Water enforced restrictions for 350,000 users amid the third heatwave in three months.
- Asset Strategy and Capital Delivery Director Stephen Plumb at Affinity Water said the company must act to protect supplies for vulnerable customers and the environment. The ban remains in place until resources recover and demand returns to sustainable levels.
