Investigators Say They've Determined Who Killed Acworth Woman in 2007
A forensic reexamination found Wayne Ring killed Carrie Hicks before dying by suicide, and officials said the case can now be closed as solved.
New Hampshire authorities have solved the 2007 killing of 25-year-old Carrie Hicks in Acworth, determining she did not inflict her own injuries. A forensic review concluded Wayne Ring killed Hicks before attempting suicide.
On Feb. 24, 2007, New Hampshire State Police responded to a 911 call at a rural Acworth home, where troopers found Hicks dead on a sofa and Ring wounded across the room.
A 2026 re-examination by Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jennie Duval determined the first gunshot wound was a contact wound that immediately incapacitated Hicks, making it physically impossible for her to have fired a second shot.
Ring died in 2012 at age 57, preventing criminal charges, but the New Hampshire Cold Case Unit formally classified the case as solved. Hicks' family expressed gratitude for the resolution.
Attorney General Formella said, "We hope that the conclusion of this investigation brings a measure of clarity and peace," and officials noted the 988 Suicide and Crisis Line remains available for those in distress.
