Scottish Greens Defend Iris Duane Over Resurfaced Queen Post
The Scottish Greens said the deleted post was a joke as opposition parties called it appalling and demanded an apology.
An unearthed January 2022 social media post by Bradford-born Iris Duane, a newly elected Scottish Green Party MSP, referred to the late Queen Elizabeth as "lizard Lizzie" and expressed anticipation of her death.
The Scottish Green Party nearly doubled its parliamentary presence, winning 15 seats in Friday's election, up from eight five years ago, with Duane elected via the Glasgow regional list.
While the Scottish Greens defended the post as "intended as a joke," Scottish Tory MSP Murdo Fraser condemned the comments as "deeply offensive and disrespectful," and Reform UK called them "appalling."
Alongside Duane, non-binary PhD student Q Manivannan won the Edinburgh and Lothians East seat for the Greens on Friday, while SNP leader John Swinney refused to rule out a coalition with the party.
This political landscape reflects ongoing tensions at Holyrood over transgender rights and facility policies, as Duane previously vowed to overturn bans on transgender people using gender-specific toilets if elected.
