New 'freedom flotilla' sets sail to try breaking Gaza blockade
SYRACUSE, SICILY, ITALY, JUL 13 – The Handala carries medical supplies, food, and children's equipment to Gaza amid a blockade that has caused over 6,500 deaths since March 2025, organizers said.
- The 'Handala' ship, carrying around 15 pro-Palestinian activists and humanitarian aid, set sail from Syracuse, Sicily, on July 13, 2025, towards Gaza.
- This voyage follows Israel's interception of the British-flagged yacht 'Madleen' six weeks earlier and occurs amidst an Israeli blockade cutting Gaza off from all imports since March 2025.
- The 'Handala' trip aims to break the blockade, provide medical supplies and food, and demonstrate international solidarity, with lawmakers Gabrielle Cathala and Emma Fourreau scheduled to join in Gallipoli, Turkey, on July 18.
- Activist Cathala emphasized that the effort aims to support Gaza's youth by challenging the ongoing blockade and raising awareness about the atrocities occurring there, while coordinator Claude Lostic highlighted their goal of demonstrating global solidarity.
- The flotilla’s attempt highlights ongoing humanitarian crises including over 6,500 deaths and 23,000 injuries in Gaza since March and raises concerns about possible violations of international law if Israel blocks the mission.
