New free service helps children and young people quit smoking
The service offers 12 weeks of free one-to-one support and nicotine replacement therapy for 12- to 17-year-olds, officials said.
On Monday, the Smoke Free Homes service launched in Worcestershire, offering free one-to-one support to help 12- to 17-year-olds quit smoking.
Councillor Alan Bailes, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, noted that early smoking increases health risks, saying, "Too many people start smoking at a young age."
Participants receive 12 weeks of guidance from experienced Stop Smoking Support Workers. Michelle Caladine, smoking prevention public health nurse specialist, said, "Stopping smoking can be difficult, especially for young people."
Appointments can be scheduled at school, home, or other comfortable settings. Caladine emphasized, "It's completely free to access, and there is no pressure or judgement."
The initiative also supports parents and family members living with anyone under 19 in Worcestershire who want to quit smoking. Referrals can be made by individuals or professionals online.
