More Flights Cancelled, Others Delayed as Ash Cloud Hazard Persists

Nineteen flights were cancelled Tuesday and more were delayed as volcanic ash forced aircraft to reroute or stay grounded, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, an ash cloud from Sicily's Etna volcano drifted into the flight path to Malta, disrupting services at Malta International Airport. Located 220 km away, Etna is Europe's most active volcano.
  • Nineteen flights were cancelled on Tuesday, causing holiday misery for passengers who were advised to check flight statuses before heading to the airport. While ash clouds occasionally force course alterations, direct impacts on airport operations are rare.
  • Wednesday morning cancellations included a Swiss/KM Malta Airlines flight to Zurich and a Jet2.Com service to Edinburgh; Transavia cancelled an afternoon flight from Paris Orly, while several other flights faced delays.
  • A Malta International Airport spokesperson said passengers arriving to cancelled flights are "being guided accordingly to make alternative arrangements by ground handlers before going up to the departures lounge." Support efforts continue.
  • Stella Levantina postponed its planned fireworks display for the Sta Marija feast due to the ash cloud and airport disruption. The club prioritized law and safety, consulting authorities before rescheduling the event.
