New England bar, restaurateur, chef win prestigious 2026 James Beard Awards
Loma in Providence, Dana Street and Evan Hennessey were honored among 4 finalists in major James Beard categories.
On Monday, New England culinary professionals secured three prestigious wins at the 2026 James Beard Foundation Awards in Chicago. Rhode Island's Loma won Best New Bar, while Dana Street of Maine and Evan Hennessey of New Hampshire earned top honors.
Marking its 36th anniversary, the James Beard Foundation Awards—frequently dubbed the 'Oscars of the food world'—celebrate chefs and establishments excelling in culinary craft, food media, and the improvement of food systems.
Providence cocktail bar Loma, a 16-seat venue on Federal Hill, won Best New Bar less than two years after opening. Co-owner Leishla Maldonado said, "Opening Loma felt like betting on ourselves."
Street, founder of Portland, Maine, mainstays including Fore Street and Scales, took the Outstanding Restaurateur title. Hennessey of Stages in Dover won Best Chef: Northeast, saying, "If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough."
The foundation continues its mission to foster a sustainable and equitable environment for independent restaurants, including efforts like the TasteTwenty program, which recognizes culinary professionals as ones to watch in the industry.
