New dads who take longer parental leave less likely to suffer depression
New dads who take longer paternal leave are less likely to suffer depression according to a study.
Fathers who took 14 to 40 weeks of parental leave were significantly less likely to show signs of depression than those who took up to four weeks.
Fathers who took five to 13 weeks or more than 40 weeks of leave did not show reduced depression compared to those who took up to four weeks.
Dr. Michael Wells explained that taking leave beyond 90 days but not more than 60% of the total leave may improve fathers' mental health by helping them build closer connections and routines.
