Canada Post honours Sikh soldiers with new Remembrance Day stamp

The stamp honors Sikh soldiers' military service since World War I, featuring Private Buckam Singh, the youngest Sikh soldier to enlist, with only 10 Sikhs allowed then.

  • On Sunday, Canada Post unveiled a new stamp at the 18th annual Sikh Remembrance Day ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery, Kitchener, joined by The Honourable Jill McKnight after wreath-laying.
  • Sandeep Singh Brar, curator of Sikh Museum.com, said Canada Post approached him about a year and a half ago and he helped develop the historical material and image for the stamp honoring Sikh soldiers since the First World War.
  • Private Buckam Singh served with the 20th Canadian Infantry Battalion, was wounded twice in France and Belgium, and died in a Kitchener military hospital where he was buried with full military honours, Brar said.
  • The stamp highlights Sikh service from the First World War to today, and organizers said it represents Canada's diverse population with broad attendance from Canadian Armed Forces, police services, veterans, elected officials, and the public.
  • Held every year since it began years ago, the Sikh Remembrance Day ceremony at Private Buckam Singh's grave highlights that his is the only known Sikh military grave in Canada and that thousands of Sikhs were denied enlistment, Brar said.
