First riots, then a political deal: Emmanuel Macron cheered on the soon-to-be agreement with New Caledonia in July. Now the independence movement of the overseas territory refuses to change through rapprochement.
While a text had been signed by the independenceists and supporters of maintaining the archipelago in France, the Caledonian Union, the main component of FLNKS, confirmed its rejection on Thursday 31 July.
The project signed in mid-July is expected to be buried by FLNKS on 9 August at an extraordinary congress. With strong opposition among the independents, it questions far beyond their ranks. Many fear a dangerous division strategy.
This text, referred to as "historical", was concluded on 12 July between the State and the political forces of Caledonia, but the main independent party now rejects the agreement.

The main independent party rejected the agreement signed on 12 July in Bougival, in the suburbs of Paris, again plunging the archipelago into uncertainty. The supporters of the text place a meagre hope in the congress of the Socialist Kanak Liberation Front scheduled for 9 August and which will have the last word.
