New breath test could quickly diagnose bacterial infections

UCSF researchers created a portable breath test detecting bacterial infections in 10 minutes using carbon-13–tagged sugars, potentially enabling faster diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

  • Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, developed a breath test that identifies bacterial infections in just 10 minutes, enabling rapid diagnosis for patients in Emergency Room and Acute Care settings.
  • Current diagnostic tools, including blood tests and cultures, are often slow, expensive, or non-specific. Professor David Wilson noted that patients and providers need immediate answers to inform treatment decisions.
  • In initial animal experiments, the team analyzed carbon-13-labeled carbon dioxide using 'nondispersive infrared spectroscopy,' successfully detecting pneumonia and bone, muscle, and blood infections within 10 minutes.
  • Wilson added that the sugar and sugar alcohols used are safe for humans, and E. coli models suggest the method could monitor antibiotic treatment effectiveness as bacterial levels decrease.
  • Research published in ACS Central Science outlines the prototype, marking a significant step toward portable, rapid breath-based testing that could replace current slow, non-specific diagnostic methods.
