My husband, Paul Auster, is dead. He died on April 30, 2024, at 18.58, at the Brooklyn house where I now write these words. In January 2023, he was diagnosed with squamous non-small cell lung cancer. But before that, in early November 2022, he was given a CT scan in the emergency room of Mount Sinai West. The radiologist detected "a mass" in his right lung and said it could be cancer.
