Blood Test May Detect Pancreatic Cancer Earlier, Allow for ‘Meaningful Intervention’

- Researchers recently published a study in Nature Medicine involving 1,800 participants to evaluate PANXEON, a new blood test designed to detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages using artificial intelligence.
- Pancreatic cancer is often called a "silent" disease because symptoms typically emerge only at advanced stages, according to UCLA Health, leaving a five-year survival rate of just 13 percent.
- By screening for three molecular signatures, PANXEON uses artificial intelligence to assign a risk score. The test accurately detected stage 1 and 2 cancers approximately 87 percent of the time with low false-positive rates.
- Beyond cancer detection, the test identified high-grade dysplasia—a precancerous condition—more than 64 percent of the time in people with high-risk pancreatic cysts. This capability helps doctors determine who needs further evaluation.
- "A stage shift is not just a statistic," said Ajay Goel, PhD, AGAF, chair of City of Hope's department of molecular diagnostics and experimental therapeutics. Additional large-scale prospective studies remain necessary before clinical use.
