Nevada’s first wastewater-to-drinking-water plant breaks ground in Reno

The $128 million project will add about 2,000 acre-feet a year and give the region a new supply during drought and wildfire disruptions.

  • Last week, the City of Reno and the Truckee Meadows Water Authority broke ground on an Advanced Purified Water Facility near Stead Airport, which will treat roughly 2 million gallons of wastewater daily to drinking-water standards.
  • Rising drought concerns in the Truckee River basin prompted the project, which caps more than 15 years of research and provides a locally controlled water source to reduce reliance on the river.
  • Unlike coastal plants using reverse osmosis, this facility employs an ozone biological activated carbon process; Lydia Teel, the Emerging Water Resources program administrator, said the method effectively breaks down contaminants while remaining less expensive to operate.
  • The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection provided roughly $128 million in financing, establishing the regulatory framework for the state's first Category A+ permit, which requires an "environmental buffer" near Stead Airport.
  • Accounting for roughly 10 percent of the utility's growth projections over the next two decades, the facility will add about 2,000 acre-feet of water annually; General Manager John Zimmerman called it "an outstanding example of what regional cooperation can accomplish.
