Netherlands looks to move past Nexperia dispute with China, Dutch minister says

Sjoerdsma said Dutch and Chinese authorities are working to contain the fallout as Nexperia’s governance dispute continues and ASML faces U.S. export pressure.

  • On Tuesday, Dutch Trade Minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma arrived in Beijing for a three-day visit, his first since 2018, to reset bilateral ties and resolve a dispute involving chipmaker Nexperia.
  • Nexperia, owned by Wingtech Technology, remains locked in a governance dispute with its parent firm following Dutch intervention in late 2025 over national security concerns.
  • Sjoerdsma told Reuters he and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held "a frank discussion" and sought a "clean break" from a previous period of friction and problems.
  • Defending semiconductor export controls, Sjoerdsma stated, "The goal... is to make sure that no material ends up in places where our security might be endangered," expressing confidence in strict Dutch oversight.
  • The visit occurs amid intensifying U.S.-China technology competition, as ASML faces pressure from Washington regarding the proposed MATCH Act, which would further restrict China's access to advanced lithography systems.
