Boyle's "Ink," Coen's "Spades" Set Dates

Netflix will release the tabloid drama in select theaters first, then stream it after a Venice Film Festival opening-night premiere.

  • Netflix announced Monday that director Danny Boyle's "Ink" will open in theaters on Dec. 11, entering the awards season corridor before streaming on Jan. 8, 2027, in the U.S. and Latin America.
  • Based on James Graham's Tony-winning play, the film depicts how Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch launched The Sun in 1969, starring Guy Pearce as Murdoch and Jack O'Connell as editor Larry Lamb.
  • Produced by Boyle, Tracey Seaward, Tessa Ross, and Michael Ellenberg, the feature will world premiere as the opening selection for the 83rd Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2, later screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
  • International audiences will see the rollout begin Jan. 6 in France and Belgium, followed by the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand on Jan. 7, and the U.K. and Poland on Jan. 8.
  • StudioCanal fully financed the project and handles worldwide sales, while Netflix also prepares David Fincher's untitled "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" sequel and Peter Berg's "The Mosquito Bowl.
