JoAnna Garcia Swisher Joins 'Ladies of the House' Post 'Sweet Magnolias'
Netflix says the new series centers on three women fighting to save a winery and their relationships.
Netflix canceled the romantic drama Sweet Magnolias after five seasons on Friday, but simultaneously ordered a new series titled Ladies of the House with showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson and executive producer JoAnna Garcia Swisher.
The cancellation follows a 30% decline in premiere week viewership for season five compared to season four, though the series had appeared in the Global Weekly Top 10 14 times across more than 60 countries since its 2020 debut.
Ladies of the House centers on a family winery and is loosely based on a novel by Lauren Edmondson. Anderson will serve as showrunner, with Swisher and Kate Gordon executive producing under their Rolling Clover banner.
"I am beyond excited to continue to tell meaningful, female-driven stories," Swisher said, adding that Netflix has been her creative home for seven years and she looks forward to working with Anderson and Black Label Media.
Considered a modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility, the upcoming series centers on three women grappling with family, friendship, and romance. Anderson said she immediately saw the foundation for this story when she first read the novel.
