Nestle's low-fat dairy whitener sample found 'unsafe' in India, says regulator

The regulator said a laboratory found the product substandard and unsafe, and it issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd.

  • On Saturday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India declared a sample of Nestle India 'low-fat dairy whitener' collected from The Lalit in New Delhi 'unsafe and substandard.'
  • Following the laboratory analysis, the FSSAI directed Bharat Hotels Ltd to immediately stop selling the product and issued a formal notice for non-compliance under the FSS Act.
  • Defending the product, Nestle India stated it is 'safe to consume' and attributed elevated phosphorus to naturally occurring levels in milk-based ingredients, not added phosphorus.
  • In September, the FSSAI identified a Nestle baby food sample as 'substandard,' prompting ongoing legal measures against the Swiss food giant in one of its major growth markets.
  • While Nestle engages with authorities sharing product data, The Lalit did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident at its Connaught Place location.
