A 10-member expert team from the Gandhinagar-based National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) departed for Nepal on Saturday evening to assist authorities in identifying victims of the devastating floods through DNA matching. So far, 233 bodies have been recovered from the flooded river in Chitwan, Nepal, of which only four have been identified. The remaining 229 unidentified bodies will be buried en masse at Devghat starting today. Before burial, each body will receive a DNA sample and a unique code, allowing for identification if a family claims them in the future.

Only a few of the dead found in the flood-affected region of Nepal have been identified. The rest are in temporary storage facilities and hospitals, informs the Honorary Consul of Latvia in Nepal.
On August 29, authorities in the Nepalese district of Chitwan began the burial of 229 unidentified bodies due to the public health risk associated with the decomposition of the remains, after a devastating flood in Rasuwa.
