Samuel M. Etnire was born July 4, 1841 to Jacob and Mary Etnire in Butler, Indiana. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania and of English descent. Samuel grew to manhood in Warren, Indiana and when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company F, 72nd Regiment, Indiana infantry at the age of 21.
