Needle Found Inside 1-Yr-Old’s Body in Kerala, Parents Allege Medical Negligence at NICU
The family alleges the needle was left during NICU treatment, and hospital authorities have assigned a deputy superintendent to lead the inquiry.
- On July 10, 2026, surgeons at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital removed a needle from a one-year-old girl's body, which her parents allege was left during treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital in June 2025.
- The infant was born at Kottayam Medical College Hospital on June 24, 2025, and transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit after developing jaundice. Mother Anjumol reported noticing a reddish patch near the child's ribs, which doctors dismissed as minor.
- For nearly a year, the child experienced persistent pain that medical professionals initially attributed to common infant issues. A detailed examination at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital eventually revealed the needle-like foreign object lodged near her right ribs.
- Following intervention by Women and Child Development Minister Bindhu Krishna, the State government ordered a separate probe into the alleged negligence. The Child Rights commission registered a case, while Kottayam Medical College Hospital authorities completed an internal inquiry.
- The family is currently awaiting the findings from these multiple investigations before deciding on further legal action. Hospital superintendent Tigy Thomas Jacob confirmed that a team of doctors had been entrusted with the inquiry several weeks ago.
