Need for Fundraising Climbs as United Way BC Hosts Annual Kick-Off Breakfast in Kelowna - Northern Sentinel
Sold-out breakfast drew 210 attendees as United Way BC said rising need is outpacing fundraising and limiting support for schools and families.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, United Way BC launched its 2026-27 fundraising campaign at Kelowna's Laurel Packinghouse, hosting a sold-out breakfast with 210 attendees at $50 per plate.
Chief Engagement Officer Patrick Brophy emphasized impact over dollar targets, stating, "The need is increasing for seniors, the cost of living, and with more kids in poverty than before."
Campaign manager Heather van der Gaag described the School's Out program, which provides snacks, playtime, and homework help, noting, "We make sure to keep an eye out for kids who may need that after-school care."
Demand far exceeds funding; van der Gaag told Black Press that 25 Okanagan schools applied last year while United Way could support only six, including Pearson Elementary.
Brophy hopes to expand the School's Out program annually through ongoing partnerships, while those seeking support can call 211 for assistance.
