Harmful Ozone May Have Reached Two-Thirds of EU Residents During Record June Heat Wave
Nearly 298 million people across Europe were exposed to ozone above EU limits during the late-June heatwave, Global Witness said.
A new report from Global Witness found nearly 300 million people, including 100 million children and elderly people, faced toxic ozone levels during Europe's heatwave in late June.
At ground level, ozone is created by chemical reactions triggered by high temperatures and strong sunlight, explained Laurence Rouil of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.
Nearly 298 million people faced levels above the European Union's recommended daily average of 120 micrograms, while 72 million endured the "most dangerous threshold" of 150 micrograms.
James Weber of the University of Reading warned that climate change drives longer, hotter heatwaves, recommending people avoid outdoor exercise when ozone pollution is high.
Senior campaigner Flossie Boyd of Global Witness called for immediate action to stop initial emissions, describing the situation as an "invisible threat" linked to fossil fuel dependence.
According to a report, some 300 million people in the EU were exposed to harmful ozone gases during the heat wave in June, with the highest levels recorded in one place in Germany.
