On the heritage side, Naples has nothing to envy in Rome with dozens of baroque villas, some of which once seduced Napoleon Bonaparte's sister. Some regain their splendour in the hands of a few enthusiasts. In the 1970s, many villas were destroyed, for lack of means to maintain them. There are still some sumptuous 18th-century buildings, almost intact and open to the public, such as the Palace of Portici, built by the Bourbons. (International).
