Minister won't commit to criminalizing residential school denialism
Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty would not commit to criminalizing residential school denialism after a reported demonstration in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Roseanne Casimir said masked individuals displayed a banner questioning reports of human burials at former residential school sites.
The demonstration took place days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours residential school survivors and children who never came home.
NDP MP Leah Gazan introduced a bill that would classify condoning, denying, downplaying, or justifying residential schools as hate speech.
