Meta Apps Displayed Ads that Contained AI-Generated CSAM
The commission is seeking facts after a BBC Eye report alleged ads tied to child sexual exploitation material circulated through Meta's platforms.
In New Delhi, The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights launched a formal inquiry into Meta Platforms Inc. following allegations that advertisements linked to Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material appeared on its platforms.
The NCPCR issued a suo motu notice on July 3, 2026, after the Commission took cognisance of a BBC Eye investigation alleging advertisements connected to Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material were circulating on Meta-owned platforms.
Meta Platforms Inc. submitted a reply within a week, though The NCPCR has not made the response public; Officials stated the probe aims to verify claims and determine if any violation of Child Rights has occurred.
Following the review, The NCPCR initiated this formal inquiry to determine if further legal or regulatory recommendations are necessary, with no Indian Authorities having officially established any wrongdoing at this stage.
This inquiry is Part of a wider global push for stronger online safety, as Authorities seek greater transparency from digital platforms. Meta-owned platforms maintain they prohibit Child Sexual Exploitative content and work with law enforcement to eliminate such Abuse Material.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologized to the government for the content related to child sexual abuse. He admitted that the company made a mistake and will fix it going forward.
