FBS Committee Proposal: Move up Start of Season, Lose 'Week 0'
The proposal would give every Football Bowl Subdivision team two built-in open dates and keep the Army-Navy and conference title weekends intact.
- On Thursday, the Division I FBS Oversight Committee recommended that Football Bowl Subdivision teams play a 12-game schedule over 14 weeks beginning in 2027, with the season starting on the Thursday of Week Zero.
- Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea, a Football Oversight Committee member, told ESPN the calendar has been a "health and safety issue," citing the need for two bye weeks to protect players balancing violent sport with academic demands.
- Eliminating the "patchwork of waivers" currently required for Week Zero games, the proposal gives schools 14 weeks to complete their 12-game schedule and standardizes the season across all teams.
- Conference championships and the Army-Navy game remain protected under the plan, while providing flexibility for potential College Football Playoff expansion to 16 or 24 teams in coming years.
- In June, the Division I Cabinet will review the recommendation, which could establish Week Zero as the official start date for teams nationwide beginning with the 2027 season.
