NCAA moves closer to allowing college athletes to bet on pro sports
The NCAA's Division I committee approved allowing athletes to bet on pro sports while banning college sports betting; 13 players face gambling investigations amid rising violations.
- On Wednesday, the Division I Administrative Committee adopted a proposal allowing student-athletes and athletic-department staff to bet on professional sports while banning college betting.
- As legalized betting spread across campuses, enforcement lagged behind, and pressure grew from federal and NCAA probes including the 2023 sting and investigations tied to the Jontay Porter case.
- The commissioned study found betting and match-fixing abuse made up 11% of nearly 4,000 flagged messages and monitored seven championship events with 5,555 athletes, 625 coaches, 466 teams and 26 NCAA channels.
- The NCAA has already disciplined players, with three men's basketball players receiving permanent bans, and Duncan said, `'Enforcement staff are investigating a significant number of cases that are specifically relevant to the NCAA's mission of fair competition, and our focus will remain on those cases and those behaviors that impact the integrity of college sports most directly.'`
- Divisions II and III are expected to consider the proposal later this month, and if all three divisions approve, the rule would take effect Nov. 1 with SAAC urging education, resources and support for student-athletes.
