NCA to investigate South Yorkshire Police officer abuse claims
SOUTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, AUG 8 – South Yorkshire Police requested the National Crime Agency to ensure a victim-centered probe after three former officers were arrested over abuse claims involving grooming gangs.
- On August 8, 2025, the National Crime Agency accepted a request to lead the investigation into historic sexual abuse allegations involving South Yorkshire Police officers in Rotherham.
- The transfer followed joint concerns about South Yorkshire Police's previous involvement and the need to reassure victim-survivors and encourage more to come forward.
- The investigation will include officers from Operation Stovewood, a decade-long inquiry from 1997 to 2013 that identified more than 1,100 victims and secured over 1,300 years of prison sentences.
- Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett and Operation Stovewood's Philip Marshall emphasized victims remain central, with Marshall stating the NCA will keep victims at the heart of the work.
- The takeover aims to restore trust, support survivors, and has been welcomed by lawyers and officials who regard it as a necessary response to South Yorkshire Police's past failings.
