City of Shelby Gives Statement After Viral Video Captures Officer Punching Woman
The department said the officer’s actions were unacceptable as protesters demanded accountability and Moore was released from jail.
On Friday, a Shelby police officer was placed on administrative suspension after a viral video showed him repeatedly punching 34-year-old Cherrie Moore during an arrest attempt. The footage, captured on a Ring camera, has garnered more than 1 million views.
Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser addressed the incident in a video message, calling the officer's actions "disturbing and inappropriate." Fraser confirmed the department placed the unidentified officer on administrative suspension while an internal affairs investigation is underway.
Family members shared photos of Moore's injuries, while her uncle, Michael Moore, described the footage as "devastating." He expressed relief the officer is on leave but wants to see him fired and barred from working in Cleveland County.
Outrage sparked protests outside the Shelby Police Department, with organizer Keelyn Surratt rallying crowds to demand accountability. Experts noted that striking a suspect who is not resisting violates standard law enforcement training protocols.
The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office stated Friday that the behavior depicted does not reflect the standards expected of law enforcement professionals. They emphasized that appropriate authorities must review the incident to ensure transparency and accountability.
