Rhode Island Couple Killed in Plane Crash on Massachusetts Interstate
Thomas and Agatha Perkins, licensed pilot and personal trainer, died when their plane crashed shortly after takeoff from New Bedford Regional Airport, investigators said.
- On Monday, a Socata TBM 700 crashed into Interstate 195 in Dartmouth shortly after takeoff from New Bedford Regional Airport, killing Thomas Perkins, 68, and his wife Agatha Perkins, 66, both of Middletown, Rhode Island.
- A local couple known for restoring historic properties and community work were identified as the victims; Thomas Perkins co-founded Kirby Perkins Construction and held a stake in Easton Air LLC for at least 17 years.
- The crash scene produced a massive fire and flaming debris across Interstate 195, striking a silver Hyundai Sonata and injuring a woman taken to St. Luke's Hospital and later released.
- The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are on scene Tuesday with Massachusetts State Police, investigating the pilot’s lack of flight plan and examining pilot physiology and aircraft components.
- With a nor'easter sweeping the region, analysts point to gusty winds and recent trips logged by the aircraft, including stops in Maine and South Carolina and a planned Wisconsin landing at 10:13 a.m.
