N.B. municipalities elect new governments, including 35 new mayors
More than 216,000 voters cast ballots as 35 new mayors were elected across the province, Elections New Brunswick said.
On Monday, New Brunswickers elected representatives for almost all of the province's 77 municipalities, resulting in 35 new mayors and 42 returning incumbents. More than 216,000 voters participated, reflecting a nearly 40 per cent turnout.
Fredericton Mayor-elect Steve Hicks won his race, while Moncton Mayor-elect Shawn Crossman secured his city's top spot. Saint John Mayor Donna Reardon simultaneously won a second term, leading a council with seven new members.
Several municipalities saw leadership shifts, including Tantramar, where Deputy Mayor Debbie Wiggins-Colwell was elected mayor, and Dieppe, where Hélène Boudreau became the city's first woman elected to the position after a tight race.
Elections in three rural municipalities, including Strait Shores, marked a return to normalcy after the Local Governance Commission had appointed supervisors for over a year due to mass council resignations.
The incoming councils now prepare for their upcoming mandates, with newly elected representatives set to be sworn in on May 25 and their first official meetings scheduled for June 1.
