N.B. Child Protection System Failed Youth Who Died of Overdose, Advocate Says
The report says officials received 16 alerts and missed repeated warnings before the teen died of a second overdose.
New Brunswick's Child, Youth and Seniors Advocate Kelly Lamrock released a report on Thursday stating the province's child protection system failed a teenager who died last year.
The Social Development Department received numerous alerts regarding the youth's school absences and drug abuse, yet treated these crises in isolation instead of connecting the dots.
In one instance, the report says a social worker assessed the teenager after an overdose and denied him access to a government support program because he was homeless.
Lamrock makes 12 recommendations in his report to reform New Brunswick's child protection system, addressing systemic failures revealed in the timeline of interactions.
The report published by The Canadian Press provides a detailed timeline of interactions between the youth and social service workers, documenting years of warnings before the second overdose death.
The system ignored 15 different calls for help during the last year of a teenager's life who died in the hospital of his second overdose. According to the Children's and Youth Defender, Kelly Lamrock, 12 people in the system turned their backs on this young person.
