Defence Ministry Inks Rs 425-Crore Contract for 12 Marine Gas Turbine Generators for Indian Navy
Bharat Forge will supply 12 indigenous 1.25 MW generators and build a test facility as the Navy seeks local maintenance and overhaul capability.
- On Friday, the Defence Ministry signed a contract with Bharat Forge Limited for 12 sets of 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generators costing around Rs 425 crore for Kolkata-class ships of the Indian Navy.
- Indian warships have relied on Russian-imported marine gas turbine generators since the 1980s. This contract advances Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives, establishing a domestic manufacturing ecosystem for naval power systems.
- The generators will contain at least 60 per cent indigenous content over a five-year execution period. BFL will establish a dedicated integration and test facility for these critical systems.
- This deal bolsters Indian Navy operational readiness through indigenous production and end-to-end life-cycle support. It grants the country sovereignty over maintenance and overhaul operations for advanced weapons and sensors.
- Marking Bharat Forge Limited's entry into the marine gas turbine business, the project positions the firm to participate in design and development programs for larger power plants and propulsion systems for future Indian Naval ships.
