Indian Navy to Commission Stealth Frigate INS Mahendragiri on July 11; Check Its Capabilities

- The Indian Navy will commission the indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri in Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presiding over the induction of the sixth Nilgiri-class warship.
- Designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the frigate features more than 75% indigenous content, reinforcing the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
- Measuring 149 metres and displacing around 6,670 tonnes, the warship integrates BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles. It employs a Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system enabling "exceptional endurance across the full spectrum of maritime missions."
- Named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the frigate is built to undertake anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations while enhancing India's maritime security and power projection capabilities.
- The construction involved over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises , generating direct employment for around 4,000 people and demonstrating the maturity of India's naval design and production ecosystem.
