- On Thursday, the Navy established the Robotic and Autonomous Systems Warfighting Development Center at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia, to accelerate development and deployment of unmanned systems across the fleet.
- Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle initiated the center to bring "operational coherence" to unmanned platforms, advancing his "hedge force strategy" that pairs robotic systems with traditionally manned platforms.
- Inaugural commander Rear Adm. Melvin Smith leads the center's three core missions: developing tactics, techniques, and procedures , training sailors, and testing uncrewed platforms in realistic operational conditions against simulated threats.
- The command operates in tandem with the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Robotic and Autonomous Systems , led by Chris Miller, which handles acquisition and budgeting while RASWDC focuses on operational employment.
- By forging a direct feedback loop, RASWDC aims to ensure sailors are "technically proficient, tactically fluent, and confident" employing these systems, accelerating capability delivery to "The Fleet" for the high-end fight.
