USS Pierre Joins Navy, Sponsored by Thune’s Daughter

The USS Pierre, with a crew of 112, features mine countermeasures and anti-submarine warfare to enhance maritime security and rapid response capabilities, Navy officials said.

  • On Nov. 15 the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS Pierre in Panama City, Florida, as the 19th and final Independence-variant littoral combat ship.
  • Littoral combat ships are designed for near-shore and open-ocean threats, emphasizing mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and flexible decks for helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.
  • Larissa Thune Hargens, ship sponsor and daughter of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, ordered the crew to man the USS Pierre, while Cmdr. Justin Guernsey will lead a crew of 112 departing Panama City next week.
  • Now officially in service, the USS Pierre will head west and join other littoral combat ships based out of San Diego, the Navy called the commissioning a `critical step` in strengthening the fleet and welcomed the ship into the fleet.
  • The commissioning comes as the Littoral combat ship program remains beset by design flaws and high costs, while the Navy shifts strategy to peer-on-peer conflict and plans to commission the final Freedom-class early next year.
