Polish Leader Wants to Strip Zelenskyy of the State's Highest Honour
Nawrocki cited Kyiv’s naming of a military unit after the UPA as the reason, saying the move gave Russian propaganda new material.
On Friday, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced he will seek to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle, following Kyiv's decision to name a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
Zelenskyy approved the honorary title "Heroes of the UPA" for a Special Operations Forces unit on May 27, while Poland holds the UPA responsible for the slaughter of around 100,000 Polish civilians during the Second World War.
Nawrocki claimed the decision "provided Russian propaganda with excellent material and considerable fuel," as Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki summoned Ukrainian ambassador Vasyl Bodnar on Thursday to formally protest.
Tusk urged both nations not to become trapped by historical disputes, warning that "someone else will win the future" if tensions escalate over past grievances.
The Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle will meet on June 8 to review Nawrocki's proposal; Zelenskyy received the award in 2023 from then-President Andrzej Duda during a visit to Warsaw.
