NATO's Rutte says allies to buy up to five Triton surveillance drones

The aircraft will add persistent maritime surveillance and support early threat detection across the Arctic and High North, NATO said.

  • On July 7, 2026, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Norway announced procurement of up to five MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicles at the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara to enhance NATO's Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force.
  • A transatlantic industrial consortium will provide ground segment, data management and mission support, with Airbus Defence and Space leading European firms supplying infrastructure alongside Northrop Grumman's aircraft construction.
  • Featuring the AN/ZPY-3 Multi-Function Active Sensor radar, the MQ-4C Triton operates above 50,000 feet for 24-hour missions with 360-degree maritime surveillance and electro-optical/infrared video capabilities.
  • These capabilities increase NATO's ability to detect threats early, protect sea lines of communication, and support operations in the Arctic and High North, including search-and-rescue missions.
  • Australia is also procuring four Tritons, positioning the platform as a standard asset for allied distributed naval warfare alongside the P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
