NATO defence chiefs to decide whether to tap Gen. Carignan for senior NATO post
Gen. Jennie Carignan could become the first woman to lead NATO’s military committee, and Canada has backed her bid with letters to alliance ministers.
NATO chiefs of defence are meeting today in Copenhagen, Denmark, to select the next chair of the alliance's military committee, with Canada's Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan competing against German Gen. Carsten Breuer.
Italy's Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, the current military committee chair, will leave his post next year, creating a vacancy in a role held by only three Canadians, with the last serving during the Afghanistan war.
On Parliament Hill, Defence Minister David McGuinty told reporters Friday that Carignan has "enormous credibility" and confirmed writing letters to international counterparts, saying "She's running a very, I think, a very good campaign."
If Carignan wins, she would become the first woman to lead the military committee and would be required to step down as leader of Canada's military, a role she has held since 2024.
Although the military committee chair position carries prestige, it lacks the broader influence of the alliance's most senior role, the Supreme Allied Commander, a command position traditionally reserved for an American officer.
