Nationwide to Make Major Change to 605 Branches Across UK in Bid to Build Trust
Nationwide Building Society is installing automated external defibrillators and bleed control kits at all 605 of its branches through a partnership with Visa, transforming branches into community emergency hubs.
Research commissioned by Nationwide highlights gaps in emergency preparedness across the UK, with 87% of people surveyed saying they would feel safer with lifesaving equipment nearby.
John Ambulance is providing first-aid training to 4,000 Nationwide employees, with the "Heart of Community" program expanding sessions to members of the public covering CPR, defibrillator use, and severe bleeding treatment.
Officials announced that similar rollouts of medical kits and training will eventually follow at Virgin Money locations, complementing Nationwide's pledge to keep all branches open until at least 2030.
Around 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the UK with survival rates below 10%, underscoring why accessible life-saving equipment and training in trusted community locations matters.
