National Treasure 3 Going Ahead with Nicolas Cage
- On Friday, Director Jon Turteltaub announced that National Treasure is "finally real" and moving forward during a recording of the National Treasure Hunt podcast in Philadelphia, marking the first public confirmation of the project.
- The franchise, which began in 2004, stars Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Gates, a historian who discovers hidden clues within the Declaration of Independence; the 2007 sequel Book of Secrets reunited the main cast.
- Turteltaub confirmed the team produced a script he approved, and Disney responded that it "sounds like a movie we can make." The director hopes to reunite the original cast, including Cage.
- While the 2007 sequel cost $130m and earned $459.2m globally, the 2004 original grossed $347.5m. The franchise also briefly expanded in 2022 with the Disney series Edge of History.
- Persistent franchise questions remain regarding what Benjamin Gates saw on page 47 of the Book of Secrets, which the previous film described as "life-altering" but left unexplained.
